Archiving
Family Photos
Many family archives have found their way to Giphantia. Sometimes it’s just a few photos; other times, it includes albums, (glass) negatives, etc. The collection contains photos with stories, stories told by the photo donor or reconstructed using related documents and postcards. Sometimes there are orphaned photos where no one knows who is in the picture. There are also photos of animals, vases, doors, objects, and events. Not all photos are made available to the public to respect one's privacy.
Album of doctor V. [2023]
Depending on the type of album, the photos are removed from the album for archiving. For this 55-page album from the period 1926-28, it was decided not to remove the photos, as the photos and text give it a nice playful look. The doctor developed his own photos and has long since passed away; the album was donated by a family member.
Negatives and Cartes de Visite DM. [2022]
This collection includes (glass)negatives from which the owner has kept the photos and decided to donate the negatives taken by her brother. Her brother has been deceased for some time, and she is elderly with no family left to pass the photos on to. In addition to the negatives, this archive contains a complete set of Cartes de Visite. Here’s a selection.
Archive of the R. Family [2022]
This archive was saved by the neighbor of Mr. and Mrs. R. After their passing, no one showed interest in their family photos. The neighbor, who has a passion for photography, took the box of photo albums and negatives to his home. Later, he reached out to Giphantia, and the photos and negatives, along with some documents and postcards, found a place in the Giphantia Collection.
